Casually surfing the #knitting tag, as you do, and I came across a post that said ‘finally finished my vegan scarf! 100% acrylic!’

Because it’s acrylic

Now I understand that the concept of being vegan means not using animal products

But did you know that if a farmer doesn’t shear its sheep, the farmer can be prosecuted for animal cruelty? Sheep need to be sheared, or in the summer they can overheat and actually die. Do you want to wool to go to waste? Sheep are not killed for their wool.

Add to that the fact that the production of synthetic materials (like, say, acrylics) is bad for the environment, often producing toxic chemicals which can kill wildlife.

I don’t even know what is going on in the world anymore

I mean, would you rather live in a world where there are no sheep, just so they don’t ‘live in slavery to humans’ or some shit? You are aware that the breeds bred for wool are completely different to those bred for meat, right? Sheep that are shorn for their wool live long, happy, outdoor lives, and aren’t killed for meat or anything. They literally live happy lives in fields, being shorn every year (as they bloody ought to be for a happy life) and we use that wool to make things to keep us warm so we don’t have to use synthetic fibres which damage our environment.

Jesus. I can understand vegans not wearing leather. But wool? Seriously?

When your own personal dogma about animal cruelty etc etc is actually counter-productive…
